I used to skate with a league where we had a ref who not only didn't wear quads, he didn't wear skates at all. And we were happy to have him! We did also have a ref who used inlines and we didn't bug him about it either because he could skate circles around most of us.

Now I'm skating with TXRG's rec league and I've watched the pro league's bouts and there's a ref there who also goes in shoes. They founded the flat track sport and if they don't have a problem with their refs not wearing quads I don't see where anyone else should get away with making that big a deal of it. Don't believe me, here's a pic of her:

I <3 refs and I don't care what they wear on their feet!

Hey Major,
I thought your words were inspiring and encouraging. In the UK we are going through some considerable learning curves and setting out a refs standard aligned to WFTDA expectations in anticipation of developing enough to be able to gain official qualification is tough but given the number of people striving for this it is clear their is a commitment to the sport and its developement.

i hope the rules never change to require refs to skate quads. it seems it would diminish the number of people willing to referee. if that's what you're comfortable on, then why should it matter? and i never realized people had such an issue with it, to the point of banning refs on inlines. it must be nice to have such an abundance of referees in your area that you could even do that.

Amen!

I'm in the same boat: I've been on blades forever and I'm way more comfortable on them than I am on quads. It totally doesn't make any difference to your ability as a ref, and in fact, if you're a better skater on blades (more agile, faster, etc.) then I don't see why you shouldn't be ENCOURAGED to wear them.

Unfortunately, I get a range of reactions around the Northeast to my blades. Some refs don't even mention it; others ask me every time they see me when I'm getting rid of the 'fruit boots'. Sometimes I get called out and ridiculed on the microphone by the announcers. It frustrates me that I'm basically being bullied into giving up my blades, but I guess it's working because I've started practicing on quads at our skating skills practices.

[...] This weekend, I had the pleasure of reffing the Atlanta Dirty South Derby Girls vs. Steel City Steel Hurtin’ bout, as well as the ARG intraleague Apocalypstix vs Toxic Shocks bout. This was going to be the first time I would get real world experience with the Tachyon XC helmet cam. Let’s pick up where we left off. [...]

I'm thinking about the right side of my helmet. Though that would only work well for jam reffing. I need to also set a mount on the top of my helmet for when I outside pack ref (which isn't often). Oddly enough, the side helmet mount is designed to work only on the right side.
